Pastel portrait demonstration on 19" x 25" Mi-Teines canson paper
1. Using a light touch for the initial drawing with nupastels (hard pastels), I closely observe angles and shadows.   2. Refining the drawing by going darker (again with nupastels), and always paying close attention to detail.

3. Adding midtones and some high lighting using softer (Rembrandt) pastels.   4. Developing the masses and checking the values of the compostion.

5. Applying and adjusting colors from darks to midtones, to lights. Again checking values and the direction of light.
6. Finalizing by lightening the lights and darkening the darks. I did very little blending of colors.
